The book starts out on a ship that's been badly damaged in battle, coming into a space station in the black. The ship's only occupant is injured, about to faint. He manages to dock with the station, falling unconscious before making it off his ship. When he comes to, he's worried about how long he was asleep. In a panic, he makes it out of the med bay, heading back to his ship. But it's already too late. As he is undocking from the station, an alien fleet arrives, destroying the station. He manages to jump away, escaping the aliens that had been following him for most of his life, without him knowing why. The aliens had never had any interactions with humans before, and are chasing him because they had a prophecy that he would be the downfall of their race.
