As the fairy mushroom forest dies off, more of the peoples hidden within are forced out into the open. This includes one small tribe of giants that are more civilized than their brethren. When they request to be included in the Unified Alliance of the Magical Realm, one of their children is invited to start at TPS on a trial basis. Just like Cary, he is eager to find acceptance for who he truly is.

Rumors had been floating around the magical realm about the fairy rings, the portals between realms, dying off. Only one portal has shown that it is unaffected by this trend, the portal that is across the street from Cary's house, created by the cloaked figure before Cary's tenth birthday. Now that Cary is growing into her power, the UAMR Council is tapping her to reach out to the cloaked figure. Only such a quest is likely to prove quite dangerous.

There is nothing like waking up in the bushes with a dead body and blood all over you to put things into perspective, especially when the cops show up minutes later. As Marcy still had no memory of what really happened, all she wanted was to get away from the party before she was arrested for murder. It wasn't often that things played out the way that Marcy wanted, and that night was no exception. However, when Marcy is cornered in the kitchen, the truth about that party, and her blossoming powers, comes out in vivid details. Moreover, that she isn't alone in getting powers. That everyone at the party were getting them, including the straight girl, her new nemesis, Tracy. Yet when these powers are revealed to the world, who gets to choose which is the hero and which is the villain.

Things are coming to a head in the magical realm. With the fairy rings starting to die off in greater numbers, the only solution to the problem is the graffiti portals. But when the only person that knows the spell is still avoiding attention, the only way to find them is to put all the bounty hunters on notice.

Cary enters eighth grade, and is finally assigned a house to specialize in. Despite her issues with illusion in the past, she was still expecting to end up in Sight House. However, when she's assigned to Battle, no one is more surprised than her.
