Mary isn't like the other mermaids in her pod. She grew up with certain disabilities. She can't hold her breath for as long as the others, so she has a rebreather to help her. Her tail was malformed, coming down in two parts instead of one, so she can't swim as fast as the others. But the thing that made Mary the most different was that she was adopted... after being found in a human vessel.

But when the humans come back looking for Mary, she is forced to make the biggest decision, go with them or risk her family and the secret that had kept her people safe for centuries. Safe from the monsters that lived on shore. Safe from her and the people that she was born to. It wasn’t that hard of a decision. What was hard was figuring out how to survive in that world and how to get back home.

From a young age, Cary Simms knew that she wasn't like the other boys her age. While she still wasn't sure the hows or whys, she was starting to think that it was more than just that she was a sorcerer. Moreover, that her parents were sorcerers too. When Cary's mysterious aunt shows up unexpectedly for Christmas, she starts to wonder if she was a sorceress herself.

Things hadn't changed much when Cary headed back to school, and she was left with the very real possibility that nothing ever would. But when her aunt's Christmas gift, a white mask, works differently in the magical realm, Cary is left wondering why her reflection started making her smile. How going out looking like a girl might just change everything.

With Cary only just coming to terms with her identity, the last thing she wanted to do was tell her grandparents about it. So, she decides to avoid them, opting to hang out with her friend Siobhan instead. The city of Avalon is a wonderous place, hiding many treasures within its walls. And many secrets as well. But when the UAMR counsel can't handle those secrets, who can?

As the fairy mushroom forest dies off, more of the peoples hidden within are forced out into the open. This includes one small tribe of giants that are more civilized than their brethren. When they request to be included in the Unified Alliance of the Magical Realm, one of their children is invited to start at TPS on a trial basis.

Things are coming to a head in the magical realm. With the fairy rings starting to die off in greater numbers, the only solution to the problem is the graffiti portals. But when the only person that knows the spell is still avoiding attention, the only way to find them is to put all the bounty hunters on notice.

Cary enters eighth grade, and is finally assigned a house to specialize in. Despite her issues with illusion in the past, she was still expecting to end up in Sight House. However, when she's assigned to Battle, no one is more surprised than her.
