From a young age, Cary Simms knew that she wasn't like the other boys her age. She didn't know why or how that was, but it seemed apparent to the bullies of her school. They would often call her names, chase after her after school, and beat her up when they could catch her. Her only protection, besides escape, was in the words of the Good Book.

But that was before she stumbled into the supposedly haunted house at the end of her street. When a mysterious ring and a drawing on the back wall of the post office opened up a whole new world for her, things quickly went from weird to scary. At a new school, in a new world, surrounded by people who had access to magic, all Cary could think of was how to escape the witches that had her trapped there. It was only having her best friend by her side that gave her any comfort at all.

While she still wasn't sure the hows or whys, she was starting to think that it was more than just that she was a sorcerer. Learning magic at the Thorbjorg Prep School was interesting, once she got past the fears for her immortal soul. But with fifth graders not being allowed out of the magical realm, Cary and her friends are stuck behind at school for Christmas break.

When the school's own traditions are waylaid by ogres breaking onto campus, the students at TPS realize that their world isn't as safe as they think it is. With mysteries surrounding them, filling the magical realm, the students fight back with knowledge and a new newspaper to spread it. Although, a few gifts from Santa can help in any challenge.

But with her grandparents refusing to tell her anything about them, or how they died, Cary is left digging up the past herself.

Cary is home for summer break, after an interesting first year at Thorbjorg Prep. But as she tries to settle into her usual summertime activities, something feels a bit off. Things aren't quite the same as they usually are at home. With her preference of the AMV bible over the old KJV that her grandparents raised her on, there aren't many options for churches in the human realm. More and more, Cary feels at odds with her grandparents and with the life she had once known.

Divination class only made things worse when everyone found out that she was keeping secrets, perhaps even from herself.

When Cary's mysterious aunt shows up unexpectedly for Christmas, she starts to wonder if she was a sorceress herself.

Things hadn't changed much when Cary headed back to school, and she was left with the very real possibility that nothing ever would. But when her aunt's Christmas gift, a white mask, works differently in the magical realm, Cary is left wondering why her reflection started making her smile. How going out looking like a girl might just change everything.

Not quite ready to face her grandparents with the secrets that she was needing to keep from them. So, when her best friend David's little sister showed up in the magical realm, Cary jumped at the excuse to spend a little more time there. However, even the great city of Avalon, with all the secrets hidden within it, wasn't enough to keep Cary from facing her own demons and the secrets of her past.

As the fairy mushroom forest dies off, more of the peoples hidden within are forced out into the open. This includes one small tribe of giants that are more civilized than their brethren. When they request to be included in the Unified Alliance of the Magical Realm, one of their children is invited to start at TPS on a trial basis. Just like Cary, he is eager to find acceptance for who he truly is.

However, she fears that going down that path would place an impenetrable wall between her grandparents and herself. Magic always seems to come between them.

Rumors had been floating around the magical realm about the fairy rings, the portals between realms, dying off. Only one portal has shown that it is unaffected by this trend, the portal that is across the street from Cary's house, created by the cloaked figure before Cary's tenth birthday. Now that Cary is growing into her power, the UAMR Council is tapping her to reach out to the cloaked figure. Only such a quest is likely to prove quite dangerous.

Everything in Cary Simms's life kept changing. First, she became a sorcerer. Then, she realized that she was trans. Now, her life changed all over again when The Cloaked Figure, the woman who started it all, pulled her away from the magical realm, to somewhere that she had never been before. The Fairy Realm. Surrounded by strangers, people that she should have known her whole life but hadn't, she is suddenly tasked with something that had eluded her her whole life: finding out just where she belongs.

As always, rumors surrounded Cary when she returned to her sorcerer school in the magical realm. The stories about her time in the fairy realm ranged from fighting off hoards of fairies to her being replaced by a shapeshifter. This time, the truth was far stranger than any of the rumors floating around. However, Cary had bigger issues running into her eighth grade year.

Instead of being assigned to Sight House, like Cary always expected, she is surprised to find herself placed in Combat House. With how close she kept to her faith, she never considered fighting an option. It was always better to escape. Suddenly, she no longer had a choice in the matter. It was fight or fail.
